For eight years, we have run the Great Wheelbarrow Way Race…pushing a Kelso Wheelbarrow from Mareeba to Chillagoe all to raise funds to continue the wide range of programs offered by the FNQ Cerebral Palsy Support Group to kids with physical disabilities.
Year 9 brought us a team with many fresh legs and a new challenge…the race in reverse! From Chillagoe to Almaden on Friday, Almaden to Dimbulah on Saturday, and Dimbulah to Mareeba on Sunday (or in the words of the runners…at long last!), the team and driver extraordinaire Chris covered all 144km. The bus (kindly donated by Howe’s farm), spent most of the weekend in first and second gear, with the occasional (and much celebrated) burst to third gear. When the team reached the finish line with a final dash on Sunday and the aches and pains were briefly forgotten.
Our team, which included Jess, Daniel, Louise, Agnus, Paul, Kelly, Kylie, Andrea, Louise Nicholson, Kelisha, Karen, Jen and Rachel, enjoyed the hospitality of the Bugno’s at Bugs Citrus over the weekend. Thanks to Chris “Chappy” Chapman for driving us while we drove him crazy!
The team was proud to take out top fundraising team with over $43,000 raised. We would like to thank all the local companies who contributed to our fundraising. Please be sure to stop in and say hello (and thanks on our behalf) as you encounter them in our region.
Plans for the 10th anniversary Wheellie Mad teams are already taking place. Could you be mad enough?
