What an amazing effort by our Wheellie Mad Women this year. Through their fundraising efforts they raised an outstanding $48,500! This money will be used to help us continue with our current programs, fund out of pocket costs of specialist equipment and allow us to continue expansion of our programs and funding throughout the Far North. With over 90 local children now on our register and eligible for funding, the money raised by our Wheellie Mad Women is crucial to our continuing efforts to support capability in children with physical disabilities.
There were many fundraisers held this year: Morning teas at various work places, monster raffles, sausage sizzles, theatre nights, garage sales, Wheellie Mad Hatter High Tea Parties and of course our inaugural Wheellie Mad Day! And when they finished all that came the easy bit of pushing a wheelbarrow 144 km from Mareeba to Chillagoe.
This year we fielded one team in the ladies category, one team in the over 40’s category and we also had the amazing Sarah Warren take on the role of Wheellie Wheellie Mad Woman as she competed in the solo category. That’s right, Sarah completed the whole 144 km all by herself in 18 hours and 35 minutes which took 2 hours off the previous record. Now that’s MAD! Our ladies team also placed 2nd and our over 40’s did a great job by being competitive in a mixed gender category. Most importantly, this year we started the race with 21 runners and, for the first time, managed to get all 21 over the line in relatively good shape (minus a few toe nails).
As usual we had an amazing support crew. They cooked for us (including an amazing spit roast on the Saturday night), set up swags, tents, marquees, packed eskys for the buses, and sympathised with our whingeing and complaining of sore feet, legs, bottoms, backs, arms, shoulders (did I miss any other body parts?). They were definitely the best support crew on the race course.
Our support crew also included an amazing team of massueses. These ladies were probably the hardest working team members of the weekend. Anna (from Tableland Remedial Massage) and Kim (from Merluna Massage) not only strapped the ladies at the start of each day and provided massage on the buses but then they continued working by treating each lady to a full massage when they were finished running for the day. Anna and Kim were joined by Renae (from Bentley Massage & Wellbeing) on the Saturday afternoon to help (after 63 kms there were some stiff muscles around the place). These guys were imperative to getting our runners over the finish line so we owe them a huge thank you!
We also had sensational bus drivers, Dennis Howe (from Howe Farming) and Brett Milde (from SunPalm Transport). These guys have driven for us so many times that we have lost count. They gave us three days of their time, use of their buses and kept us safe on the road. They are fantastic guys with great senses of humour and team spirit. They shouted encouragement to every runner for the duration of the event, very rarely got out of 2nd gear, stopped their bused every 20 seconds (sometimes more often), and still were smiling at the end. A true test of patience!
So to everyone that sponsored, both corporate and personal, bought a raffle ticket, attended one of our events, cheered as we went past or just had us in their thoughts over this years race we say “Thank You!”. It has been a truly fabulous time and we can’t wait to do it all again! Bring on 2014…. Are you ready to get Mad again?
